Welcome to IC’s Leadership Brand Blog

When Is It The Right Time?

Kelly, my client from Brisbane called me yesterday feeling frustrated. She'd just come back from the mall having spent hours with no success, trying to find the pieces to complete her professional/smart casual wardrobe.

Have you ever experienced that?

In 2017, Kelly and I embarked on her personal brand journey kicking off with a personal brand discussion followed by a personal colour session and styling session. Armed with the key knowledge, Kelly hit the ground running and had great initial success in finding some fabulous pieces to up level her professional look.

BUT THEN....

She started to feel overwhelmed, she was trying to process all the information around colours, body shape, dressing style personality, styling principles and she quickly became frustrated and stuck.

So why am I sharing this story?

Because I want you to realise that discovering and creating your personal brand is a journey. As human beings we are multidimensional. We have so many layers and every layer needs to be explored before moving onto the next. Sometimes you just can't explain certain things like:

  • why you cut the tags off your clothing
  • why you must feel the fabric first before trying on a piece of clothing
  • why you dislike linen
  • why you gravitate to texture
  • why you've lost your true style

Having taken hundreds of women through the Platinum Personal Brand Program, I know with 100% certainty that they will get long-term sustainable results.

WHY

Because we've taken the time to peel away the layers, to discover her essence and put a plan in place to create a visual signature of how she wants to show up in the world that is fully aligned and authentic to who she is.

The program is a 5-6 step journey carried out over 6-8 weeks and each step is equally important. Miss one and you'll find yourself having more questions than answers.

The good news

Kelly and I are going on a personal shopping session so I can show her in practical terms how all the branding, personality, colour and styling elements all fit into place so that it ultimately supports her personal brand and how she wants to show up in the world.

I know in my heart that this is the best way I can serve Kelly to ensure she gets the long-term gains.

Having spent ten years working with professional women, this journey is not something we can understand and solve in one or two sessions. Whilst you may initially have success, you have yet to fully form and understand your brand to be able to take it to the next level.

SH is a client that recently completed the Platinum Personal Brand Program. Here's what she said.

So when is it the right time to embark on the program?

  • If you wake up every day and feel uninspired by your wardrobe
  • If you find yourself wearing the same combinations week in week out
  • If you feel invisible at work
  • If you feel like you're not getting the recognition you deserve
  • If you go shopping for hours and come home with the "it-will-do" piece that only works with one other piece in your wardrobe.
  • If you've evolved as a woman and your current wardrobe signals where you've been rather than where you're going

Today I'm offering you an opportunity to work with me one-on-one within our Platinum Personal Brand Program.

I feel incredibly connected to this program because I've now taken hundreds of women on this journey and the results have even blown me away.

Over the years I've continued to refine it and ensure it puts every professional woman in an elevated position so she can go after the success she deserves.

Together we will uncover the essence of who you are and how you want to show up in this world.

Today I'm offering you a $49 voucher to use towards this program - expiring February 28th 2018.

You can use this voucher towards the whole program or simply get started with one session of your choosing.

Click here and let's schedule a call to see if this is the right program for you.

I am coming for your transformation!

Are you ready?

You Are My Heroes

And here we are again, Christmas! I love this time of the year.

Although its busy and I'm often battling crowds, I love to sit back and watch the kids doing their thing, having fun with their cousins and seeing and hearing the sound of happy times.  This is when I really count my blessings.

This year has been a great year for me filled with many professional and personal lessons and many opportunities for growth.

I've learned to trust the bigger picture and that everything that is sent my way is a lesson even though sometimes it feels unfair or painful.

As I become more spiritually conscious, I've learned that I am responsible for myself and I create my own reality by the way I think and therefore act.

It’s also been a big year for women.  I said two years ago that, "The World Is Ready For Empowered Women". All around the world we've seen women stepping into their power, speaking up, backing each other and claiming what's rightfully their's.

And I've also seen it in my studio and heard it when delivering my workshops.

The sessions and conversations I've had with many of you remind me just how strong women are.

YOU ARE MY HEROES

Many of you have had leadership challenges, personal setbacks and significant decisions to make. BUT you got back up again.  You dusted yourself off and are now more determined to have your presence felt and to leave your mark on this world.

For the first time in a while, I feel like the world is ready to hear our voices and is ready for empowered women.

As you start to set your intentions for 2018, ask yourself if the way you are showing up in the world is the way you want to be known and remembered?

Do you lead yourself?
Do you have the impact?
Do you have influence?
Do you want to be on the cutting edge?
Do you want to be your highest and best self?

It's never too late to start building your brand. Now more than ever we are experiencing a fundamental transformation in the way we work and your brand in 2018 and beyond will carry greater significance. More to come about this in 2018.

In the meantime, I want to leave you with this message from my daughter Maya. Click to watch it.

From my family to yours, I wish you inner peace, love and happy times this Christmas and for the year ahead.

I can't wait to share 2018 with you and for us to inch closer to closing the leadership gap.

Janette xx

My Personal Story About Courage And Empowerment

As the year comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment and share a personal story with you about courage and empowerment.

In 1995 at the age of 23, I decided to marry my first and only boyfriend. The day after we married, I knew I'd made the wrong decision.

But if I'm totally honest, I knew I was going to make the wrong decision long before this moment. Marriage for me was the only decent and acceptable way I could leave my family home. Living with a controlling parent and feeling disempowered, I thought that this was going to be my one and only chance of leaving home while still maintaining the "Good Catholic Girl" image that I was moulded into.

During my nine year marriage, I was reminded every day that I was not an equal. Although I was scaling new heights in my corporate career, traveling the globe and still doing all the household duties, it still wasn't enough to be considered equal. I'd felt that all too familiar feeling of disempowerment.

In December 2004, I attended a week-long live-in leadership course in Sydney. During one of the activities, I partnered up with my colleague Kathleen to practice a technique. It was Friday and the last day of the course. After several intense days with early starts and late finishes, my barriers were low. I'd tried so hard all week to keep it together. As Kathleen and I set out to apply our learning, I broke down. I told Kathleen that at 5.30 pm today I would be meeting my then husband and calling it quits after nine tough years.

During this long, intense and reflective week, I decided that disempowerment was not for me. No more would I be willing to allow anyone to make me feel this way anymore. I was done with disempowerment.

That evening I leaned into courage.

That evening I discovered the feeling of empowerment.

And that evening I learned that I didn't need approval from anyone else except myself.

I wanted to share this personal story with you so you get a glimpse into my past and see why I am so fiercely driven to EMPOWER WOMEN.

When I serve a client, I realise that what I offer her is COURAGE, I offer her HONESTY and the SPACE to REFLECT and digest her life in an environment where judgment doesn't exist. I help her connect the dots of who she is and how she wants to show up in this world. She too offers me an incredible opportunity to learn and feel what courage and empowerment means to me.

This empowered state of mind, allowed me to follow a new life path, allowed me to break away from the comfort zone of my corporate career, start my own business and purchase my first official property of my own.

No decision felt too big or overwhelming anymore. I realised that I had all the answers BUT only if I was prepared to REALLY listen to the whispers inside and around me.

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Aristotle

There is nothing more beautiful than witnessing and experiencing authenticity. It's not about perfection or having it all figured out. For me, its the PROCESS of self-discovery, self-love, and self-forgiveness over a lifetime and no one, nowhere gets to say who I am but me.

So today I'm sharing with you my feelings, my failings and my victories and I encourage you to share yours too because in that process you will become more of who you were meant to be.

'What is real and what is lasting is who you are and what you were meant to be, no one can take that away from you". Oprah

The most important journey that I think all of us will go through is the journey within ourselves, to find the truth, who we are and what makes us happy. So as you wrap up your work projects for 2017, take some time these Christmas holidays and think about your journey and explore project YOU.

Here's to living with courage, connection and purpose.

Balancing Your Corporate Image, Personal Style & What’s On Trend

Over the past 10 years, I've spent a fair bit of time sitting in company foyers waiting to be greeted prior to hosting corporate leadership branding workshops.

With the advent of "Bring your whole self to work", I have seen many interesting interpretations to this statement. I've seen women wearing short leather skirts, see-through tops, and hot pants and that's just in the foyer.

While these might be the right choice for the weekend I have a deep fear that women are putting themselves at risk of not being taken seriously in the boardroom. This doesn't stop in corporate organisations either.

Lately, I've seen more and more T.V personalities and Entrepreneurs exposing a crazy amount of cleavage and I've wondered why? Is it really necessary? Do you need to expose that much of yourself to get your point across....me thinks NOT!

You all know I'm a huge advocate for women claiming the leadership positions they deserve so when you read this post know that I am coming from a place of wanting to see all women succeed at the highest level.

At the end of the day, women shouldn't lose sight of the fact that they are still going to a place of business to do business.

Given women have so many clothing options they can find themselves in dangerous territory if they don't balance their corporate image, personal style and what's on trend.

I'm a huge advocate for "bringing your whole self to work" but as women, we need to keep the focus on the quality of our work and not on our body parts.

Personally, I think "bringing your whole self to work" brings a wonderful opportunity for women to re-discover their true personal style. To date, women have been conditioned to dress and act like men and some of my clients have forgotten how to tap into their strong feminine energy.

One of the most common questions I get asked by clients is, "How can I inject my own personal style and still look office ready?

Here's a simple formula that I created and share with clients. I hope it helps you find your balance.

Generally speaking an outfit is made up of 3 key ingredients – also known as "Rule of Three". Here's a previous article on this. If you follow this formula, it should put you in good stead to strike the right balance.

1. Always have one structured classic/timeless piece in your outfit. Whether it be classic style pant, skirt or jacket. The structured piece will keep your outfit looking tailored and professional.

2. Always have one piece (structured or unstructured) that reflects your personal style. This piece can incorporate your style with the use of a print, colour choice or fabric choice.

3. The final piece should give a nod to what’s on trend and within reason (ie a top, necklace style, scarf, the style of pant, a lip colour, bag or print).

Here are a few examples to demonstrate the above.

Image 1: The overall look is office ready. The skirt is a classic style in an "on-trend" colour being burgundy. Leather can have a suggestive effect, however, because its worn in a structured, classic style/length it's still office appropriate. You'll notice the top and sleeveless vest are in neutral/classic styles.

Image 2: The black cigarette pants and top are very classic and timeless. It's paired back with a classic structured blazer that's in an "on-trend" colour. P.S Wearing all black on the inside creates a slimming effect.

Image 3: Everything about this outfit is office ready. A classic blazer (with a slight twist) teamed with a pair of "on-trend" culottes. The culottes offer a twist on the classic pant but are well and truly office appropriate.

Image 4: The black skirt is your classic high waisted style. It's teamed it with a top that is currently on trend and overall the look is office appropriate.

Looking at the above examples, the women all look office ready, on trend and strike a great yin/yang balance that is office appropriate and signals their ready for the next leadership opportunity that comes their way.

Regardless of what's trending at the moment, try to stay true to yourself. Know what you look good in, what you like and stick to that.

As you get dressed for work tomorrow morning, think about your short and medium term career goals and present a personal leadership brand that is going to take you one step closer to achieving your professional goals.

Here's to all women claiming the positions they deserve.

Is Your Leadership Brand Ready For The Future Of Work?

Gone are the days of having a "typical" linear career path. The "Job for life" ceases to exist. More and more people will be bought in where and when it’s needed and ‘Retainer and call‐up’ contracts will be frequently used for rare skills.

As the pace of change in business is accelerating and competition for the right talent is fierce; leaders will need to adapt and re-train to meet the skills of the future.

So what is the future of work and how are you going to leverage your leadership brand to future-proof your career?

Here are two thoughts for consideration.

1.YOU MUST SELF LEAD YOUR CAREER.

More and more organisations are encouraging employees to manage their own careers. As a SELF-leader, you will be taking an active role in your own career development. You will be seeking the services of external service providers to help you acquire the skills you need to build a strong leadership brand. Get clear now on the skills of the future and think about how you can position yourself for success.

You also recognise that as you grow and evolve you need to retain your core sense of identity and values because you are seeking greater meaning and relevance in what you do. Understanding your WHY will help you find the right job in an organisation that reflects your own personal values.

Ultimately, personal branding is no longer an option; it’s a powerful leadership enabler.

2.THE ROLE OF AI AND WHY YOU NEED A VISIBILITY PLAN

An AI-powered talent tool will be developed in the not too distant future. Its purpose is to help organisations find the talent they need no matter which platform its on.

Every single professional woman needs to have a personal brand that is separate from the company brand.

I want you to think of your brand as your most prized asset. You can take it with you where ever you go. Your authentic visible brand will put you in a strong position as the search for talent becomes increasingly fierce.

Consider creating a separate website for yourself, make yourself visible on LinkedIn, comment on group discussions and share what's important to you. If you build an authentic personal brand and leave a trail of searchable breadcrumbs revealing who you are, you will attract potential talent and organisations to you that share your values.

When your personal brand is attractive, companies looking to hire, will find you and reach out to you.Your personal brand can help you communicate your leadership aspirations and before you know it, you’ll be head-hunted!

I don’t want you to be the worlds best-kept secret. Get out there and get clear on your visibility plan.

As you know I'm fiercely driven to see more and more women claim the positions they deserve by helping them craft an authentic leadership brand that is aligned to who they are, what they do and why they do it.

If want to be the driver of your career and learn how to create a strong personal leadership brand, register your interest for our program, "The SELF leader Brand Map". Our next enrolment will be in early 2018.
