How Uber and Airbnb Will Change The Face Of Leadership

In a world where customers and service providers can now rate each other, could this situation be extrapolated to the corporate landscape?

Uber, Airbnb and many other service providers allow us to rate the service we receive and in turn, the service provider is asked to rate the guest.

What if employees could compare leaders based on their personalities, behaviors, decisions and leadership styles. What if it was up to the leader to compete for talent in the public marketplace and to meet the wants of employees? I recently read an article by a colleague on LinkedIn that had me contemplate a new corporate concept and in turn the implications of what this could mean for leaders of the 21st century.

So how would this scenario impact you as a woman in leadership?

  • If you are aspiring to a leadership role, you need to invest in your leadership skills so that you attract team leaders and peers to you. By refining your skills you'll you'll always be ready for the next big opportunity.

  • I have no doubt that more and more leaders are looking for team members that have solid values and display those through every aspect of their role. Team members and team leaders seek greater fulfillment and purpose from their work. Being fully aware of what drives your motivation will put you in a place of securing a role that serves you well beyond the financial returns.

  • We are on display now more than ever. We now compete in a global marketplace. Understanding who you are, what you do, how you do it and why you do it will help you articulate your value both internally and externally.

  • Leaders, in this world, have to model the behaviors they seek. If you want to attract talent to your team or organisation you must lead yourself first before asking others to lead with you.

So if today you were competing for talent, how would others view and rate you and your leadership skills? Would they want to be led by you?

Now is your time to drive your success as a leader.  The world is finally ready for empowered women.

Three Ways To Power Up Your Leader Brand To Increase Your Impact, Influence and Income

I've had many mid career professional women tell me that they have been told they “aren’t ready” yet for leadership positions they seek.

For many, it came as a surprise and to others, it was the nudge they needed to power up their LEADER BRAND.

Make no mistake, professional women are ambitious. According to a national survey conducted in 2016 / 2017 by Women's Agenda, (39.14%) of professional women ticked ‘looking to earn more’ as one of their ambitions for the next 24 months. It came up well ahead of other options like ‘aiming to get a promotion (32.74%).

One under utilised tool women have at their very disposal which can help them earn more money and yield greater influence is by harnessing the power of their LEADER BRAND.

If I asked you, "What makes a LEADER BRAND Strong"? what would you say?

And if you had to make yours stronger, would you know how to do it?

Your LEADER BRAND doesn’t just incorporate how you look, it also incorporates how you sound, what you say and the way you say it.

Let's take a look at three ways to power up your LEADER BRAND

1. How You Look

Your ability to create a style and authentic brand will stem from how well you can answer these questions.

What values govern the decisions I make every day

What are my super powers

Once you have answers to these questions you can start to create an external image that reflects the authentic you.

For example, let’s say one of your super powers is your high attention to detail. The easiest and most effective way to portray this is to create a look that is aligned from head to toe. It’s all in the detail. This also creates trust in your ability to follow through.

Creating visual presence and confidence is the first step to developing a distinctive style that represents exactly who you are, how you influence others and how you show up to the world.

While you want to "Lean Into" your career you certainly don't want to "Blend Into" the sea of sameness.

Your style will get you noticed but it's your signature that makes you unique, Janette Ishiyama
Once you've created a visual signature there's no point keeping it to yourself. A significant component to creating a visual signature is that you need to share it with others. How visible are you to colleagues, stakeholders, customers and clients?

2. How You Sound

Are you voicing your personal brand?

Your tone of voice can boost or bruise your personal brand. The sound of your voice has a significant impact on how others view you. Be mindful of:

  • Enunciation: Are you clear when you speak?
  • Pace: Do you talk slow or fast?
  • Pitch: Is your pitch very high or very low?

How you sound also applies to written communication. Consider your digital footprint. Your personal and professional visibility both online and off-line is a major differentiator and has a direct impact on how people perceive you as a leader in your industry. Remember to communicate the problems you solve, the difference you make and the value you add.

3. What you say and how you say it

Do you have a compelling answer to the question “What do you do?” Being able to identify your truth and communicate what is important to you, will influence the way people think, feel and say when your name comes up.

Your body language also shapes who you are and affects the way people make judgements, and these judgements can have very meaningful, outcomes in life – like who is hired and promoted.

The degree to which you are being true to your personal brand affects your ability to command authority, and greatly influence others.

Develop Your Personal Brand From The Inside Out or Outside In?

This was the questioned posed to me during a recent, 'Women in Leadership' forum.

Let me explain.

As I was presenting on the role our personal brand plays in putting forward an aligned image of who we are and what we do, one woman wanted to know what the best approach was to craft a personal brand.

She specifically wanted to know whether she should make over her outside image to trigger the internal shift or whether she should get clarity from within which would fuel the outside transformation.

On the surface, the answer seems obvious, inside out approach, right?

Over the last ten years, I've served over 3000 professional women from all industries and across the country and beyond. I've had the time and experience now to observe interesting patterns around the question above. Let's delve deeper and explore both approaches to crafting an authentically aligned personal brand.

The Inside Out Approach

For the majority of my clients, they have taken the inside-out approach.

They have recognised that in order to have the authentic long term impact they desire they need to take five steps backwards before they can leap forward.

When I have spent time uncovering my client's values, strengths, super powers, and aspirations, together we have been able to build her an authentically aligned personal brand that has longevity and consistency.

As humans we are multidimensional and in order for me to truly create a brand for a client, it means I need to get inside their head, peel away the layers and really uncover her essence.

Whilst it may be considered time-consuming, this element of your personal growth is not one you can rush. It's a journey of self-reflection, self-acceptance, and honesty.

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Aristotle

This Inside-Out approach to Personal Branding is the most effective way to create and develop a Personal Brand that’s both compelling and sustainable. The benefits of having an Outer Brand that represents who you are on the inside can be life changing. And one of the reasons for this is because once you acknowledge who you really are on the inside, and learn how to express it on the outside, you become more of yourself. When this happens, perhaps for the first time, you feel and look ‘together.’

The Outside In Approach

Several of my clients have reached a point in their lives where they have secretly given up. They feel stuck, unrecognised at work, their ideas are not been heard and are now just buying time. These are brilliant, gifted, intelligent women who for many reasons have lost their way. For these client's I know I need to make positive change fast. I need to drastically change their state so they no longer feel invisible or stuck.

This is where the 'outside in' approach has worked incredibly well. As soon as I show them the possibilities of what they can look like, I start to see their body language, attitude and behaviour shift. Its the spark they need for them to realise they have been playing too small for too long.

Now whilst this is a short term fix, it does help them visualise the possibilities. Once they are in a more open and positive state we then take five steps backwards and go through the personal brand creation journey from scratch to help them create an authentically aligned image that will serve them for a very long time.

When Both the Inside and Outside Come Together

When your Inner and Outer Brand is congruent, your Personal Brand conveys authenticity and presence. When someone has an authentic Personal Brand, what we experience is their confidence and sense of purpose.

Your brand is your promise to the world. I encourage you to figure out who that best self is. It’s all about attracting others to you because of what you say and do, and also letting the light inside your heart and mind shine through in your personality.

The great aspect of personal branding is that you can make a fresh start anytime you chose.

Final Note

Authenticity isn't about perfection or having it all figured out. It's the PROCESS of self-discovery, self-love and self-forgiveness over a life time and no one, nowhere gets to say who you are, but you. When you share your feelings, your failings, your victories and your losses, you become relatable and create a real bond with your tribe. They become invested in the connection and YOU become more of who you were meant to be.

Why Your Personal Brand Needs To Be Both Fierce & Feminine

Do you ever feel like somewhere along your corporate career you've disconnected with the real you?

This was me in 2004. At the time, I was working at Roche, travelling the globe and working on cutting-edge cancer therapies. Whilst I loved what I did, I had this deep desire to want to "SERVE" in a bigger way. Wanting to be of service, sounded weak and vulnerable and I was too afraid of what others might think. So I pressed on and continued to ignore the whispers.

After a significant turning point at work, I realised that I needed to listen to the whispers. For the past ten years, I've been privileged to have served over 3000 professional women and c-suite executives and have helped them create a personal brand that overcomes bias and allows them to lead with confidence.

During this time, it became apparent to me that many of them had become disconnected. They no longer knew who they were. They were dressing like men, sounding like men and acting like men. Yet, I would catch glimpses of their deep feminine energy during our many conversations.

When I'm working with professional women including c-suite executives, creating their personal brand always starts with an in-depth discussion around their values, what they want from their careers and wardrobe and why often they feel disconnected with who they are, what they do and how they do it.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, former Yahoo boss Marissa Mayer and Vogue editor Anna Wintour have adopted their own “leadership look” based on wearing vibrant shift dresses and heels. While these women’s styles vary, the focus is the same, their clothes fit perfectly, they wear high-quality fabrics, and pay simple attention to accessories and grooming.

When I take my clients through a yin/yang exercise, I discover that many of them have hidden yin leadership qualities that are buried away and are only ever seen at home. Many professional women reject the feminine parts of themselves for fear of not being taken seriously.

Have women been conditioned to be more masculine in a corporate world? I think so! In the past, for women to wield power in what was historically a man’s world, she had to pretty much dress like a man. This is no longer the case and we’re free to present a new image of what leadership looks like.

If I were to ask you, "What qualities do leaders possess". It's highly likely the Masculine / Yang qualities will surface first.

The good news is that the world is changing. We are starting to embrace feminine energy. In the "Athena Doctrine", the author’s proprietary survey of 64,000 people around the world shows, traditionally feminine leadership and values are now more popular than the macho paradigm of the past.

The most innovative among us are breaking away from traditional structures to be more flexible, collaborative and nurturing. All over the world, people are deploying feminine thinking and values to make their lives, and the world, better.

So when it comes to your personal brand, how do you strike the balance between feminine and masculine energy?

Let's look at Oprah as an example.

Oprah naturally exhibits more yang physical characteristics due to her build and dark features. However, when she wears her hair curly, she instantly looks softer (more yin). When she wears her hair straight paired with dark solid frames, she instantly looks more yang as seen below. You'll notice in the top left image, the curved frames of her glasses, although dark, help her look more yin than yang.

When it comes to the overall picture, let's review how your outfit can shift you along the yin/yang continuum.

You'll notice in the images below that Oprah is wearing softer fabrics, no frames, her hair is curly and is wearing feminine colours. All of these elements teamed together make her look more feminine or more Yin.

In the images below you'll notice that Oprah is striking a great balance between yin and yang. When her hair is straight, her clothing has softer edges. When her hair is curly, her clothing is darker in colour and carries more angles. In a corporate context, professional women in positions of leadership need to strike a balance between yin and yang so they appear confident and strong, whilst also appearing authentic and approachable.

There will be times in your corporate career where you will need to exhibit more yang than yin qualities. You'll notice in the below images that Oprah is wearing block solid dark colours teamed with strong angles and straight hair. These looks carry more masculine energy.

Overall, as a professional woman, don't be afraid to embrace your feminine energy. Aim for your outfit to strike a yin/yang balance and remember to always remain true to yourself. When you deny a part of yourself, you lose your POWER!

We Are All In This Together

Women love to talk things out, right!

I always feel better when I speak with my girlfriends about an issue or situation.

They help put things into perspective and the issue no longer seems as bad as what I thought it was.

For me hosting live events,  is like coming together with my girlfriends.

We talk about our style dilemma's, getting to the c-suite seat, how to be heard and seen walking the corporate corridors, our wardrobe woe's and our shopping catastrophes.

More often than not, most women in the room have either experienced the same issue or at the very least empathise with the situation.

It just shows me that we are all in this together.

I've often asked myself, "Why do I love hosting live events"? Why am I so drawn to them?

For me, there is nothing that beats the open honest communication and connection that all women make in the room.

Here are some images taken from my very first workshops in 2008/2009 at Bondi Westfield, Sydney.

I've been running live events for nine years and our workshops are sacred places where we get to talk freely about our challenges and know that we won't be judged.

We're not perfect and we all have areas of our lives we want to change or improve. Life, after all, is a journey of personal growth, learning, and reflection.

Being able to create a safe place where we can talk freely is so important and that's what we've created at, "The Art Of Self Packaging For Success" workshop

As professional women, dressing to reflect your position, values and personal brand is no longer an option.

In this world of choice and change, you need to be the agile leader of your life.

I want you to think of your personal brand as your ASSET.

Come and join me and twenty other women on July 22nd for the #1 Style + Branding event for professional women.

Hope to see you there. Click here to register.
