Ladies, how many times have you looked at yourself in the mirror and thought, “Something doesn’t look right here ”? It could be that the proportions of your outfit are all wrong.
Have you heard of The Golden Ratio or the Golden Mean? This is a question I posed to 30 women last week during my Stockland Women’s Networking Event in Brisbane.
The ancient Greeks claimed that 1/3 to 2/3 ratio is the most aesthetically pleasing division of spaces. When you dress in uneven proportions i.e. in thirds or 1:2 ratio, this provides a more aesthetically pleasing appearance by elongating your body and legs. If you are to dress in a 1:1 ratio (halves) it can look boxy and unflattering. Take a look at this comparison
Which do you prefer?
So what does 1:2 dressing look like. Have a look at these examples. Don’t you think they look flattering?
In the below example, my client Paula had an A-HA moment about the Rule Of Thirds. She could see by changing the length of her jacket that it made all the difference.
The ancient concept also has applications in nature, mathematics, architecture and art e.g. Mona Lisa was painted using the golden ratio; the Eiffel tower was built following the golden ratio.
So when you get dressed for work tomorrow morning assess the proportions of your outfit. Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions.”
